The international e-commerce war started in southeast Asia

Source: 21st century economics
The annual online shopping carnival at Lazada, a local e-commerce firm, is now in full swing. Every year from the "double eleven" to "12-12", it is Lazada's one-month network. Lazada has sold 6.5 million items on its first day of activity this year, with a total volume of $123 million, a 171% increase from a year earlier, showing the potential of the southeast Asian e-commerce market, according to Lazada's website.
In a 2016 joint report, Google and temasek holdings, the Singapore sovereign wealth fund, predicted that the southeast Asian ecommerce market would total $88 billion by 2025, with annual growth of 32%. The total number of e-commerce markets in all southeast Asian countries will exceed $5 billion, of which Indonesia's e-commerce market will total $46 billion.
E-commerce companies, including alibaba and amazon, want a share of the region's market. But Chinese and western companies have taken a very different approach when they enter the southeast Asian market. Chinese e-commerce companies such as alibaba and jd.com have chosen to open the market by investing in local e-commerce in southeast Asia. Amazon directly builds warehouses and self-owned logistics in Singapore.
Hong tao, a professor at the school of economics and economics at the Beijing university of commerce and industry, analyzed in an interview with reporters from the 21st century economic herald, which has the advantages of entering the southeast Asian market in different ways. "Investing in a stake is a familiar business model for alibaba, and has been used by alibaba at home. Amazon's proprietary approach to southeast Asia is more likely to ensure the quality of products and services.
However, southeast Asia is not a single market, and the different market conditions of different countries in southeast Asia are challenging the local strategies of e-commerce enterprises. Hong tao believes that companies should "adapt to local conditions" when entering the southeast Asian market, while not ignoring the actual needs of local users.
Status quo: amazon has built its own proprietary Chinese enterprises to invest in local enterprises
Zhang hongtao, a Singaporean living in Singapore, told the 21st century economics reporter that he could "not go out and buy food" recently. It is the Prime Now service that amazon launched in Singapore this year.
Prime Now offers a range of products from fresh food to home appliances, and promises to deliver goods within two hours. Amazon spokeswoman Amanda Ip told 21st century business herald that the launch of Prime Now in Singapore is the first time amazon has launched a retail service in a country that has not previously sold its own network. For now, Singapore is amazon's only market in southeast Asia. Until now, customers in Singapore can only buy some of the selected items on amazon.com, and some of them require high international shipping costs.
Unlike amazon, which built its own proprietary model directly in Singapore, Chinese companies are more inclined to expand their markets in south-east Asia in the form of investment holding local companies.
Alibaba has already spent more than $2 billion on Lazada, which has a 83 percent stake. In June this year, alibaba also through Lazada platform and its logistics, warehousing, distribution system, in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand launched taobao hits "channel, output Chinese goods to local customers.
In addition, there are jingdong on the battlefield in southeast Asia. In November, the Bangkok online fashion brand Pomelo received $19 million in financing, and jd was the leading investor in the round. Jd.com has also set up a $500 million joint venture with Central Group, a Thai entity retail giant, to help sell its Chinese products to Thailand.
For two very different business model, many experts believe that questioned this is decided by the enterprise itself "gene", each enterprise all took their most familiar patterns into the southeast Asia market, proprietary self-built is amazon consistent business model, and alibaba has been as a connection platform for consumers and companies. "The business models of amazon and alibaba have been different from the beginning, and their international operations have continued their own characteristics." Zhang zhouping, director of B2B and cross-border e-commerce at the China e-commerce research center, told the 21st century economic herald.
In order to quickly grab market share in southeast Asia, alibaba is the most efficient way to invest. In addition, hong tao also told reporters on 21st century economic report that alibaba's move is to attack the business model of light assets to control market risks.
However, when the consumers in the southeast Asian market reach a certain number, the consumer's shopping experience becomes the key to the competition of e-commerce enterprises. "Regardless of the business model, price, quality and service will be the three most important aspects of consumer care. From this perspective, amazon has some advantages. Amazon's self-built model will make its logistics and quality of goods more manageable. "Zhang added.
Challenges: regional differences and talent shortage
However, all countries in southeast Asia are different in both geographical and market conditions. In addition, the infrastructure of most countries in southeast Asia is still lagging behind, adding to the difficulties of logistics and delivery delivery. This means that e-commerce companies need to develop different market strategies based on different cultures and environments when they enter southeast Asia.
In addition to investing in Lazada in Singapore, alibaba's strategy in Malaysia is to build a logistics hub. Near the Kuala Lumpur international airport, alibaba has set up a super international logistics hub (eHub) and a matching electric business platform, for cross-border trade Malaysian small and medium enterprises to provide logistics, warehousing, customs clearance, trade, finance and a series of supply chain facilities and business services.
And Thailand has become the focus of alibaba's expansion into digital technology. It is understood that alibaba and the Thai government will explore cooperation opportunities in the eastern economic corridor project, to help Thailand to become southeast Asia digital technology and regional data center, and is expected to begin operations in 2019.
Singapore's consul general in guangzhou, CAI jiatan, told reporters in the 21st century that it is unrealistic to establish a large logistics center in Singapore because of its small size. But Singapore electricity enterprise network in Singapore and even the whole southeast Asia, sales channels, logistics and other aspects have an advantage, so alibaba acquired Lazada, with their open the market of southeast Asia.
In addition, the shortage of talents in the e-commerce industry in southeast Asia is another challenge for e-commerce companies. According to Google and temasek, according to a report issued by the many successful southeast Asia local electricity still rely on talent from China or the United States team in the business, among them, the executive level of talent shortage in particular.
Amazon's choice of Singapore as the first stop in southeast Asia is partly because Singapore is the center of innovation and talent cultivation. "Amazon wants to be able to boost its local sales network in Singapore," Amanda Ip, an amazon spokesman, told the 21st century economic herald.
Cultivating local talent is also part of alibaba's strategy in southeast Asia. It is reported that the business school will launch a series of digital e-commerce skills courses in Singapore, mainly for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. Besides to on-the-job training, alibaba and the university of the Thai chamber of commerce (UTCC) also set up a partnership, the electricity for Thai students imparting knowledge, and set up a nationwide talent training plan, training ten thousand people to make them familiar with digital technology, thus helping Thailand business transformation and industrial upgrading.

ensure Beeologics

In 2011, Monsanto bought out Beelogics, a research organisation which had been looking into the causes of bee decline – a good way to ensure Beeologics research remains directed away from Monsanto’s own activities Best Restaurants in Hong Kong, as well as to bolster the company’s new “bee friendly” facade

Last year, Bayer launched a tour of US university agricultural schools called “Bee Care”, the purpose of the tour, apparently, was to “further understanding of the important role honey bees play in our food supply” Search Engine Optimization.

Bayer has also published a children’s book called “Toby and the Bees” in which little Toby is told that although bees are “getting sick” it’s a problem caused by mites, and a “special medicine” will make the bees healthy again. Strangely, there is no mention at all of neonicotinoids in the book Bo Ying Compound Eu Yan Sang.

These kinds of tactics by the big three conglomerates are reminiscent of the tactics used for years by tobacco manufacturers – sponsoring sporting events, funding “independent” research, and the like – to divert attention from the harm their products cause.

The next challenge for our dwindling bee population will come at the end of the temporary EU ban on neonicotinoids, when European politicians will doubtless find themselves under enormous pressure from these extremely powerful vested interests not to renew the neonicotinoid ban.

changing leaves

I’m sure this is true of any area of the country that grows apples, but I feel like apple picking is an annual ritual here in Virginia that officially marks the end of warm weather. It confirms that we are in the middle of autumn and the quick slide into winter has already begun. When I was a kid, we went apple picking every year. My mom would prepare a picnic the night before, and we’d wake up early the next day and drive west towards the Blue Ridge Mountains. We’d stop at a Cracker Barrel on the way to fuel ourselves for some apple picking and it was really exciting because it was only once a year, like Christmas. We would end up at some orchard my dad read about the in the Washington Post and pick apples. I’m pretty sure I’d get bored of this after about ten minutes but it was okay because there was always warm apple cider. We’d pick enough to fill a few brown paper grocery bags and we’d hit the road again. Next, we would cruise on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park and take in the changing leaves.

Perhaps I’m idealizing the whole experience in my mind. I was probably grumpy from waking up early and getting hot from picking apples in the full sun (I get hot really easily…). By lunchtime I was probably hungry, tired of the drive and most likely had a backseat argument with my little brother as siblings often do. My dad would be frustrated by all the slow drivers on Skyline, distracted by the foliage and beautiful views. Expletives yelled every quarter of a mile. But no matter, there was always that wonderful picnic my mom packed, complete with Korean barbecue ribs (kalbi), steamed rice, kimchi and of course, sliced apples for dessert. A picnic area along Skyline drive lined with yellow, orange and red trees, the smells of bbq in the air, snuggling up to my grandma to fight off the chilly air while waiting for the grilled meat to be brought to the table- those are the memories that stand out in my mind.

Now that apples are in season here I’m trying to sneak them into everything. They’re great in sandwiches, especially with a nice sharp cheese like a dry cheddar. With the chilly weather I wanted a nice hot sandwich (my building hasn’t switched over to heating, yet!) and this grilled cheese features sautéed apples slightly sweetened with honey and seasoned with thyme, and melty, oozy cheddar. I love it between two slices of sourdough but you can choose whatever bread you like. I strongly believe that freshly grated cheese and butter are key factors in the successful execution of a grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese melts better and nothing beats butter when it comes to creating that golden crust and delicious flavor. Savor the sweet and savory combination in this sandwich, the crunch you hear when you bite into it and all that melted cheese.

Marinated in olive oil

Although strawberries are usually recognized for their sweetness, we’re kicking things off with a savory recipe. Strawberry gazpacho is not a new idea, but it is certainly a good one, as the balance of acid and sweetness in fresh strawberries is actually pretty similar to the balance in a very ripe tomato. I did a little research on strawberry gazpacho recipes, but ultimately decided that none of the recipes out there had quite the mix of flavors I was looking for, so I came up with my own.

Fortunately, I was really pleased with how well it turned out. It has a little bit of everything red in it – strawberries, tomatoes, red pepper, red onion and red chilies, plus a bit of cucumber, garlic, and basil (not red, but very necessary). Marinated in olive oil and champagne vinegar, then pureed into a smooth and frothy soup, it’s well-balanced and refreshing. I topped it with red grapes, for sweetness, a goat cheese cream, for richness, and a handful of toasted pine nuts. I liked it so much I had some for breakfast yesterday – it definitely meets my serving of fresh fruit or veggies at every meal requirement, so that’s an added bonus. It’s also super easy, so I imagine we’ll be blending up several more batches of this before the summer is over.

marinade contains garlic

The noodle salad is adapted from a non-vegetarian recipe in the The New York Times and involves one of the common Asian condiments: fish sauce, which we’ve veganized last year. Pictured below is the Asian dipping sauce consisting of our vegan fish sauce, coconut sugar, fresh lime juice, finely grated garlic and 8 small Thai red and green chiles. You can use the dipping sauce in rice, noodles, or even a shredded papaya salad.

We pressed, marinated and baked the tofu until slightly browned. The marinade contains garlic, ginger, lemongrass, our vegan fish sauce, tamari, toasted sesame oil, maple syrup and ground Thai chile. If you don’t like tofu, use king trumpet mushrooms or Beyond Meat Chicken-Free Strips (shredded). We like both and find them pretty tasty in chilled salads.

For noodles, use any type of Asian noodles. But for noodle salads, I recommend any rice noodles, rice vermicelli, kelp noodles, soba or shirataki. We used Korean rice noodles, but we prefer soba or rice vermicelli for this type of dish. Cucumber and shredded carrots bring colors to this dish.

Not only is he an amazing photographer, but he is my best friend, soulmate, fashionista (well yes, he has great taste in fashion), and vegan foodie buddy. Doni’s early birthday consisted of a gorgeous vegan confetti cake (pictured below) from Sweetpea Baking Company in Portland, OR (Thanks N+L); it was absolutely tasty !

We also had a fantastic celebratory meal made by his dad: hearty vegan torchiette pasta (twisted type) with homemade stock, chickpeas and tomato & marinated kale salad with orange, pine nuts and roasted golden beets. C’était délicieux! From now on, I will keep his recipe as a secret mathconcept.
It is cookie time again and our theme this month is Cinco de Mayo. May 5 is Cinco de Mayo and is mainly celebrated in the US and parts of Mexico. It is a date to celebrat Mexican heritage and pride!! Margaritas popped into my head. I have never made a cookie like this before, one after a cocktail but I was up for the challenge. It had to have tequila in it, it had to taste of lime and it had to have a salted edge. At least that is what I thought. These cookies turned out to be so good. I really like them!! So much like a margarita!! So much fun to make!!

The edges turned out so crispy and sweet/salty.

These cookies have a yummy lime flavor with hints of tequila and orange liqueur. I researched a recipe and took some inspiration both from The Kitchn and Love From the Oven.

I mixed about 2 Tbsp. sugar and 1 Tbsp. salt together to coat each roll but do it to taste if you don’t like it too salty.

I’ve been feeling lazy lately. My bed sheets need changing. Dog hair is accumulating under the credenza in my living room (and everywhere else, if I’m being honest) as we speak, I haven’t brushed my hair in far too long (I can’t find my brush) and I have to bribe myself to wash dishes (read: snacks). It’s probably just a “this-week” kind of thing. But I’m feeling it china virtual office.

Crumbles are a perfect fit for lazy moods. They’re the lazy person’s pie. They’re for when you’re in a no-make-up-top-knot-slouchy-sweatshirt kind of mood.

Remember when the whole world hated rhubarb? Now it’s like a celebration when stalks show up in the markets. I imagine rhubarb never expected to be this cool, to all of a sudden be in fashion. Almost like how Birkenstocks are now the It-Shoe. It’s true. I have my sights set on a white pair. They’re oddly sleek. Anyway, Rhubarb and Birkenstocks have a lot in common. Both inherently unexciting. Both totally in fashion…or as my mom says it, “Esta in la moda, Adrianna.”

A few weeks ago I asked for rhubarb-pairing suggestions. Lots of people recommended weirdo combinations that I loooved hearing. Three suggestions have made their way into this crumble: balsamic vinegar, ground cardamom (via my friend Dervla) and fresh ginger healthy lifestyle.

All add a nice hint of flavor, without one being overly apparent. Think tart, a teeny bit spicy with a hint of earthiness.

And the rye flour! Ahh, as you know I love rye flour. It’s nutty and flavorful and just so grain-y in the best way possible. The walnuts add a nice crunch to an otherwise soft crumble.

This crumble is perfect for a big brunch gathering…you know, like Easter! Which is this weekend! I love Easter.

I do have one rule when it comes to this rhubarb: it must be eaten warm (ok, two rules) AND it must be eaten with ice cream Natural stone.
